3rd QUARTER 2011 www.mbca.org/NYC-Long_Island
WELCOME TO MBCA NYC-LONG ISLAND SECTION
Your Club has been going through a transition and growing despite the current economic times. Most of all, as Mercedes Benz owners, we expect and demand value with our luxury. If we didn't receive that and more from our Club - we would not join. We are all members. Otherwise, we would not be on the list to collect this newsletter and the scheduled event emails from your NYC-LONG ISLAND SECTION MBCA. Your Board has scheduled some exciting events this year. Next year will prove to be more exciting. We know you enjoy the news from the Board and the events. Your comments to the Board members and me let us know you approve. Now it's your turn. There are events to participate in, venues to visit, charities to support and good times to be had at any or all of our events. These are your events also. Drop me an email. How do you enjoy your MB? What trips have you taken with your car? What would you like to see in your newsletter?Share pictures please. I'm looking forward in hearing from you.

Many of you may have noticed that we have a new e-mail blaster. His name is John McAuliffe and he will be sending out email blasts on upcoming events. In addition, John is the new editor of the Star-Gazer. If you want to share any of your Mercedes Moments send him an email. Jerry Shapiro our past president will focus on bringing in and retaining our members.
Currently our section is in the midst of a very active Fall period. Since September, we have had the Crusin' for the Cure car show in Hicksville Long Island and the Fairfield Concours in Fairfield, Connecticut. Those of you that attended those events, not only got to see great cars, but got to know one another and share your enthusiasm for all things Mercedes. Back in June, many of you took part in the June Jamboree where many of us won prizes for our beautifully prepared automombiles. This month we have three events; an open house at the newly minted Manhattan Mercedes dealership on October 15th, the German Auto Show in Old Westbury Gardens on October 16th, and the 15th annual Alternatives for Children Rally on the 22nd of October. On November 5th we have a tech session scheduled at Gullwing Motors. Our final event this year, will be the annual Holiday party at the Inn at New Hyde Park. I am looking forward to seeing you at these events.
Enjoy your Mercedes
|PAST PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear Fellow Members:
|Past President Jerry Shapiro
I have been a member of MBCA for the past 15 years, serving our Section as a Board member, Secretary, Vice President, Star Gazer Editor, Webmaster, and most recently as President. It was my pleasure to serve you, the membership, in any way that I could. This was a positive experience for me, often devoting many hours of my personal time, yet I have no regrets.
I have always felt that for our Section's continued success, it is very important that we must have Section members come forward and volunteer to serve as a Board member, Officer, or in any constructive way to make our Section even better for you, our Section members. This will ensure that we will not stagnate; new Board members replacing current Board members will result in fresh ideas for club events, and allow Officers to retire from their voluntary duties to pursue other interests.
I'm pleased to announce that John McAuliffe will replace me as Editor of the Star-Gazer Newsletter. John has the experience to make our newsletter continue as your source of current information about planned Section events, as well as Regional and National events. Being the Editor of our newsletter is a demanding job; please help him by providing input, writing an article, sharing your Mercedes-Benz stories about your Starship, photos are always welcomed.
I will continue to be a Board member and our President, Oliver Seligman has assigned me to serve as Section membership Chair Person. My duties will be to grow the membership and retain the current membership. I need your help to accomplish this; please don't forget to renew your membership and encourage other Mercedes-Benz owners or admirers to join our Club.
Keep the revs up,
|WHY I JOINED
By John McAuliffe
I've only been with the NYC - Long Island Section of MBCA for two years. I was under the mistaken belief that auto transportation was a 'from A to B' convenience at best. Owning many cars in almost 40 years of driving I've had a share of loved cars and then there were clunkers. A friend at work, a motor head - you know the type, would excite the morning coffee talk about his cars. I'm a new technology guy and intently listened to one sided discussions about horsepower, torque, and MPG. MPG? Thirty and forty year old cars didn't get MPG - did they? I have a 70 mile round trip commute, I strived for max MPG.
This guy is also a BIG Man. I knew that Big men needed roomy cars. I tried to buy cars that fit my six foot three and ample frame. I have to admit that I not so much shopped for cars - I went for fittings. As I got older I was also concerned about my safety. The Long Island traffic is less kind today than in earlier times. I've been almost spun around by speedsters doing 90 on the Southern State and SUV bullets passing wind in the right or left lane. I wanted a heavy, roomy, beast of a car that was efficient on fuel. A Stuttgart tank was my friends reply. I found several cars on Craig's list but, settled on a 1991 300D 2.5 Diesel that filled the bill. With Room for my wife and her twin, a like sized - always traveling together brother-in-law and me, we've traveled in style. Nearly 30 MPG made it almost a pleasure to pay at the pump. - Boy, that sentence was hard to write. Pardon me.
I depend on Lou & Steve Palumbo to keep her running and with only 180,000 miles she is very much in her prime. I plan to make the most of my 'find' and keep the '91 for a long time. I get a real education from the club and look forward to participating. I answered the request of Jerry Shapiro for someone to take over the duties of Newsletter Editor. Jerry has done a great job and I hope will guide me through the transition. So, this is the first of my little tomes about the benefits of being a member. The Rally's, Car shows, community events and charities assisted by the club also interest me. The Board has a great group of people - they accepted and teased me like a brother already. I feel at home and welcomed here.
Participate in our events, get friends to join. Lets all enjoy the club together.
ANNUAL MEETING & HOLIDAY PARTY
Annual Meeting/Annual Holiday Party - Donations for John Theissen Childrens Childrens Foundation
The NYC-Long Island Section of MBCA is conducting the 5th Annual Toy Drive at the Dec. 4th Annual Meeting. We are asking each attendee to bring an unwrapped toy donation. The toys are being collected for sick and underprivileged children ages birth to 18 years old. The toys collected will be delivered to the John Theissen Children's Foundation (JTCF). JTCF was founded in 1992 as a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization. Since 1992, JTCF has collected over 600,000 new toys and donated them to sick and underprivileged children in over 185 hositals and child-care facilities across Long Island year round. The organization has also donated therapeutic and recreational equipment and helped families with medical expenses. In 20 years, JTCF has never said no to a child in need. NYC-Long Island intends to make a monetary donation to supplement our Toy Drive to assist JTCF in its year round operations. Please visit www.jtcf.org for additional information regarding the organization. If you are interested in assisting in the activities of the Toy Drive, contact John A. Weigel, Treasurer - NYC-Long Island firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you for your continued interest and support of the NYC-Long Island charitable activities.

A STEADY HAND
floated up our coast with broken tree limbs and swollen or flooded rivers, the metro area was pelted by huge hail stones.
Wielding special dent pulling equipment and specialized training. Steve spent hours on the over 100 visible dents on his client's M-B.
